State President Vo Van Thuong met British officials and asked London for financial and technological support to contribute to the implementation of Vietnam’s commitments at COP26.
State President Vo Van Thuong on May 5 met with Speaker of the House of Commons of the UK Lindsay Hoyle, Vice Speaker of the House of Representatives Nigel Evans, Foreign Secretary James Cleverly, Defense Minister Ben Wallace and many members of the British cabinet within the framework of a public visit traveled to the country and attended the coronation of King Charles III.
At the meetings, the two sides expressed their desire to expand and deepen cooperation in areas with great potential such as security and defence, development of green economy, response to climate change, renewable energy.
President Vo Van Thuong suggested the UK actively support Vietnam in finance, technology and capacity building within the framework of the Fair Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), contributing to the implementation of Vietnam’s commitments in South at the United Nations Climate Change Conference 2021 (COP26).
At COP26 in Glasgow, Scotland, Vietnam stated its determination to respond to climate change, transition to a green, circular economy, demonstrated responsibility for joint efforts to protect the environment, and committed to making efforts to protect the environment force to reach “zero” net emissions by 2050.

British officials emphasized that Vietnam is one of the leading partners in the region and agreed to continue to enhance high-level exchanges, as well as closely coordinate and support each other in multilateral frameworks.
The British government and parliament leaders affirmed their support for the stances of Vietnam and ASEAN on the East Sea, settling disputes by peaceful means, on the basis of international law, the United Nations Charter and the Convention. United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) 1982, supporting the COC negotiation process between ASEAN and China.
President Vo Van Thuong traveled to England from May 4 to 6 to attend the coronation ceremony of King Charles III at the invitation of the British Royal Family.
2023 is the year Vietnam – UK celebrate 50 years of establishing diplomatic relations. Total two-way trade turnover in 2022 will reach 6.83 billion USD, up 3.4% compared to 2021. Total export value of Vietnam to the UK in 2022 will reach 6.06 billion USD, up 5.2% compared to 2021.
By the end of April 2023, the UK had 519 valid projects to invest in Vietnam, with a total registered capital of about 4.2 billion USD, ranking 15th out of 143 countries and territories with the project. investment projects in Vietnam.
In terms of education, the UK is currently Vietnam’s leading partner with 74 transnational programs of 23 British universities helping Vietnam to train tens of thousands of undergraduate and graduate students right in Vietnam. About more than 12,000 Vietnamese students are studying in the UK. The Vietnamese community in the UK has about 110,000 people.
