Immediately after the opening ceremony, a plenary session was held under the chairmanship of the IPU President and General Secretary. National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue and leaders of the National Assembly/Parliament in the world discussed the topic: “Achieving sustainable development requires more focus on what areas, happiness and well-being for people, protect the environment or prioritize economic development”.
Speaking at this session, National Assembly Chairwoman Vuong Dinh Hue shared the view that sustainable development should focus on taking care of human health and protecting the environment rather than focusing on economic growth only. economy at all costs. This is in line with the United Nations’ SDG-2030 Sustainable Development Goals and is a harmonious balance of three economic, social and environmental goals.
According to the President of the National Assembly, people are the true and most valuable resource and wealth of all countries, the purpose of socio-economic development is for people to have a prosperous, free and happy life. , having conditions for comprehensive development, equality, solidarity, respect and help for each other to develop – that is a solid foundation factor that is decisive for sustainable development. The National Assembly Chairwoman emphasized that the fact that many valuable lessons have been drawn on environmental pollution, natural disasters, climate change, epidemics and the COVID-19 pandemic is a profound wake-up call about paying attention to the environment. Pay attention to the living environment and human health, invest more in the public health system, always ready to deal with unpredictable diseases in the future. The National Assembly Chairman stated that, in the national development strategy and plan, Vietnam always determines not to trade off the environment as well as the health of the people for a high rate of economic growth, but always aims to achieve the goal. Sustainable development goals, in harmony with nature to ensure a healthy living environment for current and future generations; people hold a central position in the development strategy in which the development of education-training and science and technology is the leading national policy; Environmental protection is one of the vital issues, a criterion for sustainable development.
National Assembly Chairwoman Vuong Dinh Hue affirmed that the Vietnamese National Assembly has promoted and supervised the implementation of legal documents on economic model transformation towards a green economy, digital economy and circular economy. ; strengthen resource management, protect the environment, respond to climate change, increase recycling and reuse; efforts to perfect the system of policies and laws on environmental protection; strengthen resources and state management capacity, promote development and application of science and technology, improve communication and education on the environment and people’s quality of life. The National Assembly Chairwoman emphasized that Vietnam is eager to cooperate and share with other countries and international organizations to prioritize people’s health, environmental protection and economic development.
A number of Parliamentary leaders speaking at this session also mentioned emerging challenges in the world today for sustainable development such as climate change, security, environment, etc., and discussed how to balance between development and preservation of the environment, ensuring the people’s welfare and livelihoods… *
